Diabetic Food To Eat: The Do's and
Don'ts
Tips for diabetic food to eat: The most
pervasive effect of diabetes is the toll it can take on your
everyday life. Diabetic people are forced to make changes to
their diets so they don’t consume foods that will generate
irregular surges of glucose in their blood and keep their
insulin production steady. But there are a couple of dos and
don’ts everyone who is affected by diabetes should keep in mind
when re-organizing their diets to make them more suitable to
their new-found disability.
Diabetic Diet Dos
Lets start with the dos. Your regular diabetes diet should
count between 1500 and 2000 calories depending on your body’s
mass and daily activity level. It is very important to keep
your diet diverse so you will have a variety of nutrients. Also
make sure that you eat the recommended amount of fruits and
vegetables per day. You should stick with fruits that have a
low glycemic index such as apples, oranges and pears. Cherries
are also known has being one of the best fruits for
diabetics.
You should keep your intake of fried foods to a minimum. Try to
go with rotisserie chicken instead of fried chicken and always
go for the leanest cuts. Drink juice sweetened with sugar
substitutes such as Splenda or that are unsweetened. There are
plenty of unsweetened fruit juices out there that pack as much
of a punch as any other artificially sweetened beverage.
Diabetic Diet Don’ts
Red meat is a no-no for anybody who is affected with diabetes.
You should go instead for lean poultry or fish, even if they
may be higher in fat than red meat. Keep away from liver or any
other organ meat. Try to avoid condiments that are high in
calories and sugar such as ketchup or relish and go for low
sugar alternatives such as mustard.
Alcohol can also be very dangerous for diabetics; try to avoid
it by all means. Stay away from energy drinks or any other kind
of artificially sweetened beverage. Go for fresh foods instead
of frozen meals or canned produce. Watch the amount of sodium
contained in the food you eat and stay away from MSG’s. If you
are in a rush and have no choice but to go to a fast food
restaurant, go for a broiled or grilled chicken sandwich
instead of a fried breaded sandwich, switch the coke for a
glass of unsweetened orange juice and take a salad instead of
fries.
While these guidelines will allow you to keep your glucose
blood level at a reasonable level, We suggest you visit a
nutritionist that will be able to design a tailor-made diet for
your condition and lifestyle. It may cost you a bit, but its
well worth the peace of mind of not having to worry constantly
about what you should or should not eat on your diabetic
diet.
